About The Artist: Isaac Friedlander

Isaac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Mitau, Latvia. He studied art at the Academy of Rome. He was befriended by the Russian writer Maxim Gorky and began his print career in 1917. In 1929 he emigrated to the United States. A prolific etcher and wood engraver, his work emphasizes the imagery of his native Riga, the urban spectacle of New York during the Depression and the horror of the Holocaust. Death place: NYC? About The Medium: Woodcut

A relief process in which the image is cut in a block of wood with tools such as knives, goughers or chisels. The image is inked with a roller, paper is applied to the surface and the back is then rubbed by hand or with a rubbing tool, transferring the image to the paper.
