About The Artist: Anthony Gross

Anthony Gross CBE, RA (1905–1984), was a British printmaker, painter, war artist and film director of Hungarian-Jewish, Italian, and Anglo-Irish descent. Anthony Gross was born in 1905, at Dulwich, London, the son of the Hungarian cartographer and founder of Geographia Ltd, Alexander Gross (1880–1958), and suffragette Isabelle Crowley (1886-1938). About The Medium: Aquatint

An etching process in which tone is created by treating a plate with fine particles of acid resistant material (like powder resin) and then placing the plate in an acid bath. The acid bites into the plate between the grains of resin and when printed, the mass of tiny spots produces a textured area with tonal effects similar to watercolor wash.
