about Cartes Per a la Teresa

This is a portfolio of lithographs with mixed media by Catalan artist Antoni Tapies, who is credited with introducing contemporary abstract art to Spain.

Produced in 1971, the Cartes per a la Teresa series plays with the double meaning of the word carta (letter and playing card). The numerous playing cards pasted on the lithographs are as many allusions to the abundant love correspondence of the artist and to the esoteric nature of gambling and chance.

About The Artist: Antoni Tapies

Spanish painter, Antonio Tàpies, studied law from 1943-1946 at the University of Barcelona before taking up painting. He was largely self-taught and his early works had surrealist tendencies, resembling the styles of both Joan Miro and Paul Klee. During the mid 1950’s, Tàpies’ work shifted toward abstraction and he started implementing mixed media into his work. It was with these pieces that he gained notoriety....
