Austin Cooper, born 1890 in Souris, Manitoba, Canada, died 1964. Designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport 1922-1944 Educated; Cardiff School of Art; 1903 Educated; Allan-Frazer Art College, Arbroath ; 1906-1910 Educated; City and Guilds School; 1910 Austen Cooper's career as a commercial artist began in Montreal, Canada. After the First World War, he moved to London. In 1922, he received the first of many poster commissions from London Underground, becoming one of England's leading poster designers. The first Principal of the Reimann School of Commercial and Industrial Art (1936-40), he turned from his career as a poster artist in 1943 to become a full-time painter and had his first one-man show in 1948 at the London Gallery. His book, Making a Poster was published by Studio in 1939.
