About The Artist: Ben Macala

Ben Macala was an important 20th-century South African artist. Working primarily in sculptures and drawing, his oeuvre focused on portraits of stylized, wide-eyed faces, with a particular focus on the motif of Madonna and child. Born on April 21, 1938 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, he was largely self-taught and is said to have spent much of his time as a youth drawing on rocks in the countryside while herding cattle. About The Medium: Charcoal

A form of dry art medium made of finely ground organic materials that are held together by a gum or wax binder or produced without the use of binders by eliminating the oxygen inside the material during the production process. Charcoal can produce lines that are very light or intensely black, while being easily removable, yet vulnerable to leaving stains on paper. The dry medium can be applied to almost any surface from smooth to very coarse.
