Charles Bance

French (1771–1863)

About the artist:

Parisian print publisher, younger brother of J.L. Bance (Bance aîné, qv). First recorded in print business in 1793. First recorded at 10 rue J J Rousseau in 1811. His nephew Hilaire Aumont publishing independently at the same address from 1812, and between 1819-24 many plates published in partnership as Bance & Aumont. After 1824 Aumont went his own way, and Bance ceases publishing (he is no longer recorded in the Bibliographie de France) in favour of printselling and dealing in works of art. His heir Balthazar Bance, the son of Jacques Louis Bance, predeceased him and so the bulk of his estate passed to his great-nephew, Albert Bance. Biography from the British Museum
