In bright pastels of orange and pink this view of the iconic Parisian square of Palais Garnier is perhaps set in the late 1800 or early 1900s.

Horse and carriages can be seen navigating the plaza. Inspired by Raoul Dufy, Cobelle’s views of Paris incorporate the architecture, whimsy and beautiful colors for a 1960s design. Unframed from circa 1961, an acrylic on paper.

About The Artist: Charles Cobelle

Born in Alsace - Lorraine France in 1902, Charles Cobelle (born Carl Edelman) lived and painted in Paris until the late 1920s when he moved to the United States. Cobelle took his Bachelor's and his Master's degrees from the University of Munich and later studied at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also studied privately with Marc Chagall and apprenticed in the studio of Raul Dufy in Menton on the Riviera. In the time before he moved...
