About the artist:

Charles Frederick William Mielatz, born in Bredden, Germany on May 24, 1864 was a pupil of the Chicago School of Design and Frederic Rondel in New York. He was a member of the New York Etching Club (Secretary); ANA 1906; American Watercolor Society, receiving awards; and the St. Louis Exposition 1904. He also served as an Instructor at the National Academy of Design. He was taught etching by J. J. Callahan the amateur, and became so fascinated by the art that he ended by devoting all his time to it.His first etched work was produced in 1883, and he was one of the most energetic members of the New York Etching Club, from his election in 1890 to the Club's dissolution. For fifteen years he was chief Instructor in etching at the school of the National Academy of Design. He died in New York in 1919.
