About the artist:
The fact that most of the universe, vast or minute, can only be known secondhand through technological means has long inspired Chris Gallagher's work. His paintings are clearly handmade, yet give the impression of something technological and overwhelming: rushing, incessant information or vast cosmological phenomena. Gallagher deftly streams vibrating bands of color from edge to edge and implies an expansion beyond the boundaries of the canvas. In certain cases, the brilliant striations curve or gently arc as they radiate across the picture surface, bending as if under the influence of some force located beyond sight. The varied colors, chosen intuitively by Gallagher from a complex palette, softly blend into one another and register the hand of the artist through slight imperfections in the brushstrokes. The density produced by this technique, along with the unvarnished surfaces, allows the work to glow with an inner light.
