This still life oil painting by French artist Claude Venard uses some of the techniques of Cubism to create a partially fractured scene.

None of the objects - the teapot, cup, plate, etc - are shown with perfectly defined edges but are instead broken up into harsh segments of different colors and of light and dark. What should create a sense of disjointment instead comes together to form a tableau of a table just laid out for breakfast, lit brightly by the morning sun.

About The Artist: Claude Venard

Claude Venard was born in 1913 into a business family from Burgogne. At the age of 17 he began to take evening classes in painting at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués. However, after six years of conscientious study, he was forced, in order to support himself, to spend most of 1936 working as a restorer at the Louvre Museum.
