A vibrant oil painting on canvas by French artist Claude Venard.

Painted in 1974, this still life of orchids and poppies features sand underneath the green paint of the vase to add more detail. From afar, the piece seems flat and uniform, but the sand, as well as the impasto painting technique, adds several layers of surface texture. The work is nicely framed in a gold leaf frame and is signed in the lower right.

About The Artist: Claude Venard

Claude Venard was born in 1913 into a business family from Burgogne. At the age of 17 he began to take evening classes in painting at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués. However, after six years of conscientious study, he was forced, in order to support himself, to spend most of 1936 working as a restorer at the Louvre Museum.
