David Nguyen

Vietnamese (1977)

About the artist:

David Nguyen emigrated from Vietnam to the United States in 1989 at the age of 12. As a young boy Nguyen loved to draw sprawled out on the living room floor. In High School, Nguyen took art classes every year. In 1995 he received an award for best student in painting and appeared on the local news for winning a silver medal in a window decorating contests. At age 18, Nguyen began sharing an apartment with other Vietnamese in his local community. After High School, Nguyen attended the NY Technical College and focused on Hospitality Management. Two years later he transferred to the NY Restaurant School to complete his training in Culinary Arts. Upon graduation, Nguyen became a cafeteria chef in the SoHo Grand Hotel, where he continued to learn and experiment with pastries. Nguyen’s passion for pastries led him to become the general manager of a Haagen-Dazs store, expertly decorating cakes for all occasions. David Nguyen loves his job at Haagen-Dazs for he feels he is able to express himself with the decorations of the cakes. David has recently joined the Washington Square Outsider Art Exhibit (WSOAE) hoping to share his talents with the rest of the world. Nguyen studies international works of art and applies what he learns in his own floral watercolors, utilizing the methods and techniques he learns from observation. He can spend upwards of six months to a year on a piece, painstakingly working for hours on end to complete a single, extraordinarily detailed few inches. He believes that “miraculous works can be created if enough effort and determination is applied – the unbelievable, even that beyond the wildest of imaginations, is humanly possible.”
