Domingo Domingo

American (1942–(1942 - ))

About the artist:

Domingo Domingo was born November 25, 1942 on Nantucket Island Massachusetts. He was born on a Sunday, where the inspiration for his name was conceived. His mother died when he was only 9 months old. From that point he was raised by his father and grandparents; motherless, he attended a lot of parochial boy's schools, and later, reform schools. He became a wayward child, as he describes a radical adult; an outlaw.

Painting since the tender age of five, and with only a ninth grade education, he launched his career. He studied under Professor Van Wyht - from Holland, at the Rhode Island School of Design for four years, and calls him one of his most influential "earthly" teachers. He has painted in all 48 of the contiguous states, with the most inspirational being California, Arizona and New Mexico.

He found some solace in painting, but not enough to fill the void of his missing mother. One night, April 17th, 1977 at 10:45 in the evening, a hitchhiker he picked up, shot him and left him for dead. In one blink of an eye, he gave his life to God, because of this experience he says "God is my ultimate inspiration when I co-create and paint the beauty of my visions. It is, I believe, one of our Lord's great gifts to mankind for all time."

He has painted and or exhibited with Ozz Franca, Amada Pena, Veloy Vigil, Frank Powell, B.C. Nowlin, Gorman, Nieto, and Jean-Claude Gaugy and many more. He is currently being exhibited in shows with other contemporary artists such as Theo Tobiasse and Leroy Neiman. He was well-known in the beginning of his career for his Southwestern Ethereal-style art, eventually transitioning to Abstract Expressionism which he believes are inspired by visions that he receives from God.

Hi Greatest Inspiration? "Simply God", Domingo replies. He also gives a great deal of credit to long-time friend Jane Miskell who pushed him in a different direction with his art and life (and keeps pushing he quips). He has also been inspired by and honors the styles of Modigliani, Picasso, and Kandinsky, however, he says, "There is truly only one Domingo in this world".

He has owned galleries in Cave Creek and Carefree, Arizona, as well as Santa Fe, New Mexico and Palm Desert, California. He is displayed and owned by a number of influential homes across the United States, and a majority have continued to add more of his paintings to their collections
