French (1911–2001)

About the artist:

Emile Rampelberg was a French textile designer and painter .

Emile Rampelberg was born in Flanders and lived in Paris from 1918. From 1939 he worked as a textile designer. In 1942 he opened his own studio, which employed around 30 people and which he ran together with his brother Charles. Rampelberg was known for his colorful fabric designs, which French fashion designers incorporated into their collections. He received numerous awards for his designs.

Rampelberg earned his living through textile design; he also painted, primarily in watercolors and gouache. In 1945, Rampelberg exhibited his pictures in his studio for the first time. He found his motifs in his native France, but also in Italy and Spain. After 1985, he intensified his activity as a painter, and his paintings were shown in solo exhibitions in Paris, Strasbourg, Brussels, and Solingen, among other places. A critic wrote in 2001 on the occasion of an exhibition in Souillac : "The paintings of this artist, who was born in the mists of the North, in Flanders, are a colorful homage to landscapes with sun, sea and light in general, in a style that is less geometric than current painting."
