about Docked Gondolas

In a glimpse of a moment that could only have been caught on the canals of Venice, Italy, Emile Rampelberg focuses his attention on two gondolas bobbing on the water.

There are no figures or towering feats of architecture to impede on the composition as there would be in typical depictions of the floating city. Instead, Rampelberg creates a moment of peace free of the noise of the world around him. Even the water fades to white in the distance, centering the focus and importance of the work solely on these two solitary boats. Provenance: Galerie Felix Vercel, New York.

Emile Rampelberg was a French textile designer and painter . Emile Rampelberg was born in Flanders and lived in Paris from 1918. From 1939 he worked as a textile designer. In 1942 he opened his own studio, which employed around 30 people and which he ran together with his brother Charles.
