Barlach began work on his second drama, "Der Arme Vetter" (The Poor Cousin), sometime around the year 1909.
In 1911, it bore the provisional title of "Die Osterleute" (the Easter People), and he referred to it as a "dramatic monstrosity, perhaps never to be completed". As far as can be learned from his letters, the piece was finished in 1912. The play written in the text and depicted in the collotypes of this two-book portfolio takes place on Easter Sunday along the upper Elbe river. This printing is a later edition produced by C.G. Röder in Leipzig in 1964 and printed by Hinstorff Verlag in Rostock. Both books of this portfolio are bound in canvas boards and the book containing the text of the play also includes a colophon with all printing, publishing, and edition information.
