Francis Atlee Caldwell was born in San Francisco, CA on Dec. 18, 1911 into a family of artists and writers. Raised in an artistic milieu, "Frank" Caldwell opted for an art career. He studied at the CSFA, Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and with Warren Rollins in Santa Fe. After serving in the Marines, he taught at Los Angeles City College and did murals for the U.S. Maritime Commission, Pasadena Playhouse and other theaters. He also did artwork for television shows, such as the Perry Como Show and NBC's opera series. Until 1970 he was art director of New World Productions. He then devoted his time to easel painting and graphics until his demise in Los Angeles on Feb. 28, 1996. Exh: Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1937.
