About the artist:

George Hunt is an artist with an unconventional and abstract view of the world. His paintings unmask the emotions of his subjects and evoke an immediate response. Memphis in May is pleased to have "The Blues Men" by George Hunt as the representative work for the 1992 Beale Street Music Festival. "The Blues Men" will also be the first art work reproduced and signed in a numbered edition for the Beale Street Music Festival. George Hunt was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas, Pine Buff, in 1960. George has studied with two giants of African-American Art. John Howard at the University of Kansas, and Hale Woodruff at New York University. He credits Richard Knowles at Memphis State University for Giving him his true direction. His works has been displayed in both individual and group exhibitions across the United States, including the Howard University Gallery and the Private Collection of the Football Hall of Fame - Jimmy Brown, and actor Larry Riley (Knots Landing). He Has Been Chairperson of the Carver High School Art Department, Memphis, TN, Since 1972: Director of Shelby State Community College Summer Youth Program, "Art... Serious Business" (1980 - 1990); received special recognition from the Department of Labor for Outstanding Service to American Youth, 1987; recipient of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. College of Black Spirits Award, 1988; co-author, Twenty Five Black Artists in Memphis, 1987; nominated for Rotary Award for Teacher Excellence, 1987; spotlighted for Teaching Excellence by Memphis Arts Alliance, 1983. His publications include: Memphis Arts Council Artist Calendar, 1991, Homespun Images, 1988, Memphis Magazine Special Issue vol. 7, 1986.
