Giles Norman

Irish (1961)

About the artist:

The first click of a shutter by the hands of Giles Norman was for a school project. The first camera he could call his own arrived on his 18th birthday. And the first darkroom to bring his photographs to life was in the attic of an old friend’s house. Relocating his darkroom to a rented space in Kinsale, Giles began working on his first portfolio in 1981. Both locals and tourists flocked to the tiny window of this studio, which offered a glimpse into his growing collection. This welcomed curiosity encouraged Giles to open his first gallery in 1988, with 2018 marking the gallery’s 30th anniversary. The Giles Norman Gallery is located in an elegant Georgian building on the Main Street of Kinsale, the beautiful coastal town that marks the beginning of the Wild Atlantic Way. The gallery documents his travels across Ireland and beyond, capturing the romantic streets of Paris, the ancient canals of Venice and the vibrant skylines of London and New York. Born in the England in 1961, to English and Belgian parents, Giles moved to Ireland at the age of 15, and it was Ireland’s dramatic landscape that first inspired Giles to become a photographer and which compels him still. Giles lives in Kinsale with his wife and business partner, Catherine, and their children. His studio is located next door to the gallery – it’s home to his digital dark room and is where all printing and framing takes place. Whilst Giles spends much of his time in Kinsale, he also finds time each year to add to his vast portfolio, with the launch of two new collections in 2018: Aran Islands 2018 and Kinsale Under Snow 2018, and the upcoming release of his new Rome collection in 2019.
