Gino Scarpa, also known as Gino Luigi Ettore Scarpa, was born in Venice Italy in 1924, though for most of his career he was active in Denmark. Before devoting himself to painting and sculpting, Scarpa studied architecture. In 1945 he decided to become a painter and by 1953 he was teaching the history of art in Bressanone until 1957. His art would explore the use of mixed media and complex combinations of materials such as cement and copper. His abstractions were inspired by his study of ancient Scandinavian rune stones. Scarpa has appeared at the Venice Biennale in 1948 and the Rome Quadriennale in 1948 and 1959, as well as numerous other major collective exhibitions. His work can also be found in museums and galleries in Bolzano, Charlottenburg, Copenhagen, Trento, Venice, and Vienna.
