Gustave van Steenwegen

Belgian (1905–1986)

About the artist:

Painter, draftsman, painter under glass. Self-taught as regards painting. Begins in the Netherlands during World War II. Follows drawing classes in G. Van Der Heyden in Breda, later in A. Geudens in Brussels. Painted with brush and knife landscapes, seascapes, flowers and still lifes. Inspired mainly Antwerp and its surroundings. Begins at the limit of Expressionism, passing influence of Permeke. Lyrics to the soft and colorful palette and solidly constructed compositions. The theme is important, not the motive. Also made many glass paintings, demonstrating great dexterity. Member of "Modern Art", "Kunst van Heden." Participated in all exhibitions of the artistic circle of Antwerp. In 1962, founder of "The Free Workshop" in Antwerp, with J. De Sutter and J. Godderis. Work at the Museum of Antwerp. I mentioned in BAS and "Two Centuries of Artists Signatures of Belgium."
