About the artist:
Gyorgy Stefula, born in 1913 in Hamburg and died in 1999 in Bad Trissl, was a German painter, illustrator, costume and stage designer. His unique body of work, in the spirit of Henri Rousseau or pittura metafisica, includes imaginary landscapes or unlikely portraits; it is full of hypnagogic symbolism and mythological references. Preceding his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and Master School of Painting in Altona (1935-8), Stefula trained himself as an art teacher. While in the Academy, he met Dorothea Hüter, later his wife and artistic collaborator. However, the obligatory military service during World War II imposed a hiatus on his artistic development. After the War, he partook in numerous exhibitions inside and outside Germany, including venues such as the Haus der Kunst (1949), Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund (1952), and Galleria d'Arte Totti in Milan (1953). Alongside Dorothea, they often displayed their works together and collaborated on several projects, including the stage and costume design for the National Opera in Munich (1955). Furthermore, they were devoted joint retrospectives, first at the Städtische Gallery in Rosenheim (1980), and the others at the Galerie im Alten Rathaus in Prien (1997, 2003).
