about Riposte

James Coignard’s Riposte captures the dynamic energy of Abstract Expressionist gesture through the French artist’s innovative carborundum etching technique and bold compositional strategy.

This powerful work demonstrates Coignard’s ability to convey movement and tension within the printmaking medium, creating a visual response that seems to react and counter with expressive force. The piece showcases the artist’s mastery of textural contrast and his deep understanding of Abstract Expressionist principles, rendered with the technical precision and surface richness that made him a leading figure in contemporary European printmaking. Riposte exemplifies Coignard’s talent for transforming aggressive artistic gestures into sophisticated printmaking compositions that challenge traditional boundaries.

About The Artist: James Coignard

James Coignard, painter, ceramist, sculptor and etcher, was born in Tours in 1925. About The Medium: Carborundum

The trade name for silicon carbide, carborundum began its use in printmaking as an abrasive which was used in effacing lithographic stones. The particles, when mixed together with glue can also be used to draw on a plate - sometimes creating a raised surface - which is then inked and printed with the ink being held in the spaces between the particles. The resulting prints are often textured due to the raised areas of the printing surface.
