In the center of the composition, a donkey holds a sign that reads "La Ruelle aux Ânes Joyeux" or "The Alley with the Happy Donkeys" In the bottom center of the middle panel, the artist, Jean Fourton, signed and dated the piece.

Jean Fourton is a writer, humanist, painter and psychoanalyst. Born 1934 in Puy-en-Velay, France, Fourton lived in North America after World War II. Upon returning to France, he worked as a journalist for several publications.
