about Deck of Cards

Immerse yourself in this captivating hand-signed mezzotint by Kurt Schönen depicting a mysterious still life arrangement of playing cards, candle, flask, fruit bowl, and other objects in a dark, atmospheric interior.

This evocative print exemplifies the Still Life and Surrealism movements through its dramatic lighting and enigmatic composition that transforms everyday objects into a scene of contemplative mystery. Schönen’s exceptional mezzotint technique creates deep, velvety blacks and subtle tonal gradations that enhance the moody, dreamlike quality of the scene. A sophisticated example of contemporary Surrealist Still Life printmaking that demonstrates the enduring power of traditional mezzotint craftsmanship, perfect for collectors seeking atmospheric interior scenes with symbolic depth.

About The Medium: Mezzotint

A printmaking process of the intaglio family, technically a drypoint method. It was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line- or dot-based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple.
