A challenging piece by American Pop artist Larry Rivers.

This collage-style print centers on the duality of colorism, particularly in the US. White people are encouraged to use products to get tanner while Black and other People of Color are sold dangerous bleaching products to lighten their skin. Rivers pulls clipped images of these products’ advertisements and places them all together in one place to juxtapose their contrasting messages.

About The Artist: Larry Rivers

Painter and sculptor Larry Rivers was born in New York City in 1923. In the 1950s, he became one of the first artists to explore the figurative style which follows abstract expressionism. With the use of illustrative material from advertising and familiar paintings, Rivers produced works that have a broader public appeal than those of pure abstraction. About The Medium: Lithograph

A print created using flat stones or metal plates. The artist creates a lithograph by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using materials like lithograph crayons or special grease pencils. After this, the drawing is transferred from the plate to the paper in multiples. A lithograph will not have dots when examined with a magnifying glass.
