Lewis Brown was an American theatrical costume designer. The Lewis Brown costume designs document his work with various regional theaters and television productions throughout the country. Lewis Brown (1928-2011) was an American theatrical costume designer. Born in California, he studied art at UCLA.
After moving to New York City, he worked as a staff costume designer for NBC television from 1955 to 1964. He was also an active theatrical designer, working on shows for the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, The Old Globe Theater in San Diego, and many other notable regional theaters.
The Lewis Brown costume designs document his work with various regional theaters and television productions throughout the country. Most designs are watercolor or pastel originals. There are some rough pencil sketches. Most drawings are signed, dated, and annotated. A few drawings have sketches on the cardboard backing and some include cloth swatches. Many files only hold one or two designs from an individual show, but there are some full sets of designs including the 1965 production of Caucasian Chalk Circle and the 1961 production of Richard II. The production date and theater company are listed when known.
