Manuel Felguérez Barra (Hacienda de San Agustín del Vergel, municipality of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, 1928) Mexican painter and sculptor. He studied at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda" in 1951, at the National School of Plastic Arts of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1948, at the Academy of the Grande Chaumier in Paris between 1944 and 1959 and between 1954 and 1955, at the Academy Colarossi, Paris, France on a scholarship from the French government. These last two are of paramount importance to their training, and that's where working with the Russian-born French sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1949-1950). Zadkine, an artist trained in Cubism, will become one of the major influences for the later work of Manuel Felguérez. Upon his return to Mexico, is part of the first generation of abstract artists national openly confronted with the tradition of the Mexican School of Painting, headed by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco, to the generation of rupture belong include: Vicente Rojo, Fernando Garcia Ponce and Lilia Carrillo, who had met with Zadkine, and with whom he would marry in 1960 Felguérez, being widowed in 1974 when, after five years of paralysis due to a spinal cord aneurysm dies Lilia Carrillo.
