about Rhinoceros

A whimsical portrayal of an acrobatic rhinoceros by French artist Mario Avati (1921-2009).

Standing on only two feet, the rhino balances one ball on his horn, supporting his weight on a board precariously placed on another ball. Avati was considered in his lifetime a master of the mezzotint medium, a difficult printing process that requires great finesse. This mezzotint is signed and numbered in pencil, edition: 51/75. It is offered unframed.

About The Artist: Mario Avati

Mario Avati is a French painter and engraver (born 27 May 1921 in the Principality of Monaco and died in Paris on February 26, 2009), who lived and worked in Paris. With the passing of Yozo Hamaguchi, Mario Avati stands alone as the foremost living mezzotint artist. In 2001 Fitch-Febvrel held a small retrospective to mark the artist's 80th year, as well as the publication of Volume VII of a catalogue raisonné now spanning more than 50...

About The Medium: Mezzotint

A printmaking process of the intaglio family, technically a drypoint method. It was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line- or dot-based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple.
