Mark Rothko, along with Clifford Still, pioneered the Color Field movement.
A branch off of the Abstract Expressionist movement, Color Field sought to overwhelm the senses of the viewer with limited pallettes at often a very large scale. This tri-tone painting on paper by the artist is a reduced version of the style he used in his bigger pieces, using just three colors and almost no blending to create a simpler composition.
