about Melting Pot Flag

This 1989 silkscreen was based upon a 1976 original collage, which is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

The piece incorporates typesets and torn pages from vintage newspapers in multiple languages, including El Diario, the New York Post, the New York Times, Il Progresso, Novoe Russkoe Slovo, etc. It was created by Vignelli in 1976 for the US bicentennial and printed later in 1989. It is pencil numbered from the limited edition of 300.

About The Artist: Massimo Vignelli

Massimo Vignelli was an Italian designer who worked in a number of areas including packaging, houseware, furniture, public signage, and showroom design. He was the co-founder of Vignelli Associates, with his wife, Lella. His motto was, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything," which the broad range of his work reflects. About The Medium: Screenprint

A stencil process employing a frame on which silk or synthetic fabric is stretched. Stencils are hand-drawn or hand-cut and placed on the stretched fabric and act as a block out when the ink passes through the screen by means of a squeegee onto the paper, the non-stencil areas create the image. Also known as silkscreen or serigraph.
