About the artist:
Well-regarded painter M.S.L. Calvan is mostly known for his abstract impressionist style using an impasto technique. Calvan was born in Frankfurt, Germany and educated in Rome. A favorite subject was Paris. He was quite prolific there in the 1960's, having settled there in his 40's, but he exhibited his work throughout the major cities of Europe. Most of his surviving paintings feature typically Parisian street scenes, famous landmarks like Notre Dame, pedestrians walking along the Seine, etc. This painting likely depicts a back/ corner section of Notre Dame with people walking along the boulevard behind the church. It measures, unframed, 24" x 12". (It is sold unframed.) Calvan's work, if signed, is typically in black marker, all caps.
