about Honeymoon Express

Nicky Watanabe's eye for color and detail is apparent in this print depicting a countryside town with a railway station.

Rushing to the platform, a newly-wed couple runs to catch their train for their honeymoon after having just married at the church next door. While a crowd has gathered to wish them well, two maids wait patiently outside the large home at center while animals roam the hills and ships move across the water.

About The Artist: Nicky Watanabe

Watanabe was born in Japan in 1937. Educated there, he graduated college with a degree in Communications. As a result of his initial choice of a career in the television industry, he was sent to the United States to study our production techniques. This experience ultimately led to his decision to relocate to San Francisco in 1972. It was here that Watanabe began painting. About The Medium: Screenprint

A stencil process employing a frame on which silk or synthetic fabric is stretched. Stencils are hand-drawn or hand-cut and placed on the stretched fabric and act as a block out when the ink passes through the screen by means of a squeegee onto the paper, the non-stencil areas create the image. Also known as silkscreen or serigraph.
