One of Pablo Picasso's most well-known works, this piece represents the turmoil and destruction brought to a small village in Basque Country by the Nazis when they dropped aerial bombs over the market of the town while nearly all men were away fighting the Spanish Civil War.
Showing elements of suffering in the mother holding her child to the left, the horse being gored and screaming in agony, and the numerous other figures suffering in the darkness, this work brought attention to the Spanish Civil War and serves as an emblem of the destruction and atrocities that come with the cost of war.
