This rare Pierre Soulages lithograph commemorates the 1972 Munich Olympics, showcasing the French master’s signature Abstract Expressionist style through bold gestural marks and dramatic tonal contrasts.

Soulages is known as "the painter of black", owing to his interest in the colour "both as a colour and a non-colour. While some of his more noteworthy paintings cover the entire canvas in thick walls of black paint from edge to edge, this lithograph mimics his more Minimalist and gestural compositions. Just a few arching lines hung from the top of the page, splattered with small dots and almost resembling the curling script of Arabic writing. The only color is the orange text and Olympic iconography. This lithograph is number 179 in an edition of 200 works and is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.
