Rene´ Pean, born in Paris on 1 July 1875 and died in Ermont (Val-d'Oise) on 4 September 1955, is a painter, poster artist and illustrator French. Student of Jules Cheret, he created between 1895 and 1905 in the workshop Chaix many posters for the entertainment and leisure. His family is originally from the Sarthe and had settled in Paris at the beginning of the Second Empire. In 1889 he was apprenticed in the studio of Jules Cheret, now, after 1881, the Imprimerie Chaix, at 20 rue Berge`re, where he remained until 1910. In 1891, he also studied lithography at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. At Chaix, where he has colleagues Lucien Lefevre and Georges Meunier, production of posters for the theater, tourism, department stores, modern manufactured goods, is abundant: 150 posters approximately between 1895 and 1913. They depict young women smiling and elegant or landscapes and monuments described with almost photographic precision. Two of his productions have been reproduced from the boards of Masters of Poster: Instead Clichy (1898) and In the three neighborhoods (1899). In December 1899, an article on Shakespeare piece in the journal The Ramp, attests to the fact that he created the costumes for this piece. In 1901, he participated in the collection of one hundred and 1903, the contest for the poster Byrrh. He also draws for the press in newspapers such as The Smile, The Illustration and The Ramp. He is the friend of Alfons Mucha. The workshop Pe´an was located at 80, rue Taitbout in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. In 1918, he married Marguerite Emilie Canod, but do not have children. He is buried in Paris Cemetery Chapel.
