about In The Highlands

This majestic engraving by Robert Carrick depicts a solitary Highland warrior standing with sword among dramatic mountain valleys, cattle, and rocky terrain beneath sweeping clouds.

Created in the Romanticism tradition of 19th-century British landscape art, Carrick’s detailed line work captures the rugged grandeur of the Scottish Highlands and the proud spirit of its people. The composition features towering mountains and expansive valley views, characteristic of Pre-Twentieth Century explorations of national identity and sublime natural landscapes. A powerful example of Carrick’s engraving work that showcases his ability to render the dramatic beauty of Highland scenery with romantic sensibility and patriotic reverence.
