Robert Hoppe

American (1943–1989)

About the artist:

Emmy-winning artist Robert Hoppe, who was commissioned to design posters for Hollywood's 100th anniversary and Paramount Studios' 75th anniversary, has died of complications of AIDS. He was 46. Spokesman Ron Baron said Hoppe, who maintained residences in Los Angeles and New York, died Tuesday at his sister's home in North Hollywood. A painter, sculptor and set designer, Hoppe received a Desi Award in graphic design and an Emmy for scenic design. His glamorous Art Deco cityscapes of Hollywood and New York were popularized in recent years by Mirage Editions, which published limited editions of his prints and posters. Prices for his original works soared from about $3,000 to six figures. His work included advertising posters for movies such as "A Chorus Line" and sets for ballet and dance companies. Hoppe's family and Mirage asked that memorial contributions in the artist's name be sent to AIDS Project Los Angeles, 6721 Romaine St., Los Angeles, CA, 90038, and designated for research. - from Obituary in LA Times Sept 1st, 1989
