About the artist:

Born: April 21, 1944, Washington, D.C. Studied: Baruch College, City University of New York; Eastern New Mexico University B.A. 1966 Mr. Yucikas (pronounced you-SEE-kiss), who has lived on the Lower East Side for nearly 50 years, is an accomplished painter who studied anthropology in college. As an abstract expressionist painter, Mr. Yucikas has had many exhibitions and reviews, and he has shown his work at major museums in New York. His artwork blends aspects of Mondrian and bits and pieces of Manhattan’s cityscape colorfully arranged in frenetic rhythm — a Bowery boogie-woogie style. The bold, broad brush strokes that keep his work modern can also be seen at the museum keeping things looking old. To touch up walls and doors, Mr. Yucikas might mix up a drab gray or brown and use purposely sloppy applications. “It’s not exactly abstract expressionism — it’s the art of restoration, but it does take an artist’s hand,” he said, turning to the vintage ceiling light fixtures he fashioned from plumbers piping. “That’s why they need an artist in here who can keep it looking old.” One-man exhibitions (selected) 1972 Contract Graphics (The Texas Gallery), Houston 1974 Lehman College, City University of New York 1974 Whitney Museum Art Resources Center, New York 1977 Dubins Gallery Los Angeles Group exhibitions (selected) 1973 AJdrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, "Contemporary Reflections" 1977 Cornell University Ithaca.
