In Dante's "Purgatorio", Canto 22 - the author is guided by Statius and Virgil through a level where those who hoarded or spent excessively were all made to do penance for their sin. In Dali's image, two nude figures pose in agony as their excess manifests on their bodies. This is likely a visual pun by Dali, as "prodigious" can also refer to how well-endowed a person can be. This woodcut is signed and numbered in red pencil and nicely framed in gold.
