About the artist:

Saul Chase has been a painter and printrnaker for more than fifty years. His interest in drawing and painting as a boy growing up in the Bronx in the 1950s, was intensified by his fascination with the endless play of light and shadow on the structures that surrounded him. The West Bronx "edge of the city" landscape with its improbably juxtaposed elements, provided a universe of urban odds and ends and hidden beauties to be remembered and resurrected.After graduating from CCNY in 1965, Chase taught classes in oil and watercolor painting at the City College of New York. He also taught art to underpriviledged adolescents in the South Bronx. In 1968 he began exhibiting his work at "ACA Gallery" in New York, where he remained until moving to the "Andrew Crispo Gallery" seven years later.As an early inhabitant of Soho, arriving in 1970, before AIR and legal living, Chase soon felt a romantic affection for the bleak isolation of this yet to be discovered decaying factory district. It was the perfect "La Boheme" setting for any romantic young artist, but it didn't last long. By the late 70s, the desolate, rough-hewn enclave had evolved overnight into a "chic" and expensive place to live, shop, eat and be seen. This change, along with a growing desire to escape the sometimes treacherous New York "Art Scene" made departure inevitable. After selling his Greene Street loft in 1981, Chase moved with his wife and children to a secluded hilltop home and studio about fifty miles north of the city, where he continues to live and work.Through several different oeuvres over the years, the quest has consistently remained an inward-looking exploration of distilled visual experience.
