This dramatic scene by Shannon Stirnweis shows the danger involved with life on the American frontier.
Opening her door enough to aim a rifle at the Native American men gathered outside of the log cabin, the wife protects her family and livelihood from the potential assailants. Circling around one another engaged in conversation, the three men on horseback carry spears with them for either protection and the potential of attack. Hiding behind his mother's skirt, the fearful young boy represents the difficult relationship between white pioneers and the Native Americans whose land the settlers took.
