American (1934)
About the artist:
"One of the most widely recognized of modern realists, Tom Nicholas was born in Connecticut in 1934. He was awarded a scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York and later traveled extensively in Europe through a Greenshields Memorial Foundation grant. Noted for the lyrical rhythm and technical mastery of his paintings, Nicholas displays a profound sense of place reflected in a deeply poetic expression. Nicholas was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1963 and a full Academician in 1970, one of the youngest artists ever to be so honored. He is a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society, a member of the Knickerbocker Artists and Allied Artists of America. A bibliography of critical studies of his work includes articles in the American Artist, Today's Art, Western Art Digest, Southwest Art and The Artists - England and America." The delightful freshness that Tom Nicholas brings to every painting is the result of painstaking preparation - dozens of drawings and many small color sketches. Nicholas has won 49 major awards and has had more than two dozen one-man shows. His works hang in 14 museums. In this painting, of a sugarhouse where maple syrup is boiled down, Nicholas has captured the magnificence of the Vermont countryside in winter.
