About the artist:
Watanabe Nobukazu was a woodblock artist who was active from 1874-1944. He was active towards the very end of the ukiyo-e period, when the popular days of this style were over. Printmakers like Nobukazu struggled to keep afloat in the art world by depicting the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Yōshū Chikanobu was his teacher (active 1838-1912) and Watanabe Nobukazu was considered his best student. The majority of his prints were triptychs of battles both on land and on sea of the Sino-Japanese war.
