Landscape and figure painter, William S. Carter was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1909. In 1930, he moved to Chicago and began studying art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Illinois. In 1940, he exhibited work at Howard University Gallery of Art along with Charles White.
