about Going to Church

Discover the spiritual beauty of "Going to Church" by William Tolliver, an original screenprint that captures the profound tradition of Sunday worship in the African American community through expressive artistic vision and bold graphic design.

This evocative work showcases Tolliver’s distinctive approach to African American Art, where simplified forms and vibrant color create a contemporary interpretation of faith, community, and the central role of the church in African American cultural life. The artist’s masterful handling of the screenprint medium creates rich, saturated hues and graphic clarity that transform this spiritual journey into a celebration of faith, tradition, and the enduring strength of community bonds. A distinguished addition to any collection focused on African American Art, American Art, or works that celebrate the intersection of spirituality and cultural heritage by this self-taught master.

About The Artist: William Tolliver

William Tolliver, born in 1951, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is the second oldest of fourteen children. Truly a rags-to-riches story, William, reared in abject poverty, had none of the advantages most people take for granted. Now a veritable master of all...

About The Medium: Screenprint

A stencil process employing a frame on which silk or synthetic fabric is stretched. Stencils are hand-drawn or hand-cut and placed on the stretched fabric and act as a block out when the ink passes through the screen by means of a squeegee onto the paper, the non-stencil areas create the image. Also known as silkscreen or serigraph.
