Yuri Kuper

British (1940)

About the artist:

Yuri Kuper, who has exhibited in the U.S., Japan and Europe, and whose works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, is noted for his mystical, melancholic, eerily transcendental still lifes, often constructed with found objects from the painter’s studio. Working rigorously through the classic processes of the Modern artist, Kuper is all about carefully gesturing paint – texture, mood, tone, color – all about managing a richly nuanced ground in which his objects take on the quality of hallowed archaeological “mummies” or intensely felt hammer, or pitcher standing in for every man. One is reminded that there is such sweet tragedy in the comfort of faded, familiar objects from childhood, a failed marriage, an abandoned garage – and so few times that we can lock our minds upon these talismans to feel that state of suspended being.
