About the artist:

Agustin Cardénas was born in Matanzas, Cuba on April 10, 1927. The son of a tailor, he decided to enter the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro in 1943 and continued his studies there until 1949.

In 1955, Cárdenas arrived in France. He moved to Montparnasse and met André Breton who offered him in 1956 to participate in a group exhibition at L'Etoile Scellé, a surrealist gallery. From 1956 to 1997, Cárdenas took part in a hundred group exhibitions and thirty-four solo exhibitions. He was promoted Chevalier des arts et des lettres and received the Bill and Noma Copley prize. From 1968, he lived and worked regularly in Meudon-Bellevue and in his studio in Nogent-sur-Marne. His five sons were all born in France.

Cárdenas has also worked in Canada, Austria, Japan, Israel and Korea but especially in Italy, in Carrara, where he sculpts marble, and in Pietrasanta, where his bronze sculptures are cast. From 1994 to 2001 he lived in Havana where he ended his days.
