Francis Saillart

French (1941)

About the artist:

Francis Saillart was born in Paris in 1941. He is a painter (oil and watercolour), a draughtsman and an engraver. His vast and indefinable work does not belong to any contemporary school. His main inspiration manifests itself through symbolic landscapes which reveal what is invisible by way of the visible. His masters are essentially the French School of painting, and the Taoist Chinese landscape painters, his early love. Francis Saillart is also a poet and an author. He has written, notably, about the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, the altarpiece painted by Jan Van Eyck, in Ghent; the Wreathed Column in the ambulatory at St. Séverin Church in Paris; and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. He has translated Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which was performed in Vaucresson in 2009, directed by Daniel Pitolet. He has also translated all the Shakespeare’s Sonnets, as well as the poem "Let the bird of loudest lay", also known as "The Phoenix and Turtle".
